Nachi, a small coastal town near the southern tip of Wakayama Prefecture, is home to the tallest waterfall in Japan, the stunning 133 meter high Nachi no Taki (Nachi Falls), and next to it the Nachi Taisha Grand Shrine, one of the Kumano Sanzan, the three shrines at the heart of the area, and also Seigantoji Temple, part of the same complex. I visited Nachi no Taki around 2 weeks ago, and it took me around 4 hours to visit Hiryu shrine, the pagoda, nachi-kumano taisha, and walk 2/3 of Daimonnozaka at a leisurely pace. There are no direct public transport methods from the Hongu area (Yunomine Onsen, Watarase Onsen, Kawayu Onsen) to Nachisan (Kumano Nachi Taisha, Seiganto-ji, and Nachi waterfall).

I'm planning a day trip to Nachi falls in February 2019 and was wondering how much time is recommended for one to have an enjoyable visit. I'm planning to stay at wakayama and understand that it would be a 6 hrs trip to and fro. Based on what I'm reading from the JR schedule website, I kinda am on a little time constraint, possibly just 3-4 hrs.

I will only be in Osaka for 3 or 4 full days; will it be advisable to do a day trip to Nachi... I have been to Nachi Falls in Autumn, 2015. Kumano Shrine is beautiful, but in my opinion, I think this place is too modern, compare to other traditional sight seeing spot in Japan. Some building here also block up scenery. Anyway, Nachi falls is one destination for those who want to see different point of view in Japan.
